I got into the transmissions of my 88 and 89, but that was quite a few years ago. I tore the 88 completely apart and replaced all the bearings and seals. That work was good for40k until the unavailability of ABS pumps and rust killed the car. I had to reseat the ovalised RH bearing seat in JB Weld on the 89 because a PO did an auto manual swap and didn't change the carrier mount. That fix lasted 60k until rust killed the car.
Reason I mention this is you shouldn't worry too much. If I understand correctly you put in an assembly that includes the drivers side shaft, bearing, and bearing mount(flange?) that attaches to the transaxle with 5 or so bolts. That's a big improvement over a trashed bearing. The shims set the preload on the pinions in the differential. Getting it perfect is an art, but If it shifts OK, doesn't whine too bad, and you keep the right oil in it, it might last a long time.
