I asked the seller. He said it was a 1994 Aero engine. It certainly LOOKs like a turbo, especially after your description. I feel kinda foolish here because after all these years I certainly should know what a turbo looks like. But almost (no, ALL) my SAABs have been exemplary cars with exemplary engines. I normally lift the hood to check the fluids and clean. That's about all.
