I had a similar issue in a '93 9000. It would go from cool to heat, but not always from heat to cool. As I recall, if you remove the radio, and stick your hand up alongside the RH side of the air box, you can feel a couple of servos/control cable ends. CAREFULLY lay your fingers on them, and change the temp. You should feel something moving. Be careful to not get your fingers pinched when doing this. I got to the point where I would get hot air instead of cool air, pop the radio out, and manually move the correct servo while driving. I did eventually tear the dash apart and replace the servo, but it's been close to 10 years and the car is long gone.
