I have never been successful in getting the CV joint off the axle. Mine a late model and apparently glued on. I have a jumbo set of snap ring pliers and have never been able to get the joint to budge. I've tried several different axle shafts. I will likely find one with a good CV and just clean the joint and replace the boots. That also assumes they haven't been changed with aftermarket axles before. Most of my junk is pretty old when I got it.
