little bit of back story so car had been driven earlier in the day no problems everything seemed fine and was fine. Car has around 400 horsepower.has about thirty thousand miles with that much horsepower on a freshly rebuilt motor, new rings new bearings new timing chain all the good stuff. So started the car up after it had been driven earlier and sounded like a diesel.so got the stethoscope out and it seems to be coming from the timing chain area but maybe the valve cover really hard to pinpoint.so pull the engine pulled the head pulled out the number one piston, bearings look okay doesn't look like rod knock.so buddy of mine said maybe the timing chain tensioner spring let go and the chain was just in there flopping around. Anybody ever heard of that happening.been driving sasbs for 20 years never seen that failure on a 900 or a 9000. First time for everything I guess. The only thing I didn't do was mess with the balance shafts in the motor I left them alone completely. But I put the stethoscope on both of those and they were quiet.also put the stethoscope on the direct ignition cassette above spark plug number one and it almost sounded like something was hitting it.and if I put the stethoscope above where the chain was at it almost sounded like something was hitting it as well so maybe it is in the chain somewhere.that chain only has 30,000 miles on it as well and when I took the valve cover off all of that stuff seem tight.I turned the motor over with the starter with the valve cover off and the chain never seem to get loose but could it still be the chain making all the racket. Any thoughts in the ideas. Thanks.I'm going to take the cams out tomorrow and look at the top of the head see if I can see anything.I also push down on several of the lifters to see if maybe the spring had broke I haven't found a broken spring but maybe after I get the cams out maybe something will show up.
