I would get another quote for this job. I have not done a head gasket on SAAB 9000, but have successfully done head gaskets on other cars and don't believe that it is a $2300 job - unless they are replacing a lot more than just the head gasket, i.e. the balance shaft chain and associated parts (which shouldn't need doing at 99k).

Parts are readily available and not that expensive. If you do a search, you will find several Do It Yourself descriptions of the work. Head should probably be sent out to a machine shop for surfacing and to replace the inevitable broken exhaust manifold studs.

However, if you do decide to get rid of your 99k mile car, .... - my 9000 has 200k!
