I'd do it. You'll never find another 9k that sounds as good as yours later and you won't find another car nearly as good for $2300.
I agree this price sounds high, but sadly probably not totally out of line these days and that presumably includes resurfacing the head and maganflux checking for cracks at the machine shop. For what it's worth the head has almost certainly not cracked, that's a lot more common in some cars than others and I've never heard of a Saab with a cracked head on this board. You could shop the job around, but it's probably worth a bit extra if you have a really trusted Saab mechanic you like. And yes, you can do the job at home without much in the way of specialized tools and save yourself $2k, but it is a very big job.
