John,

Thanks very much. I have used motor oil for years in my 99 Turbo (Mobil 1 15W50). Saab started recommending lighter oils back in the 70s. Current MT oils (Honda, the last iteration of GM/Saab, etc.) all seem very light - in fact, they look a lot like ATF.

What I have done so far is drain out the original oil (seemed fairly thin). It was quite dark, and could have been original based on the maintenance history, but smelled fine and there was very little debris on the magnetic plug. I filled it with Redline MTL (75W-80) which also seems very thin when poured in.

I did not detect much, if any, change in the behavior of the gearbox. This gearbox (112,000 miles, owned 25 years by "mature" couple) has a faint whine in all gears, so I'm going to say that's normal - you can't hear it if the radio is on. I would not say that it pops out of first, but it comes out very easily if you rest your hand on the lever (which is a bad practice anyway). Going down into 4th from 5th is a bit notchy, maybe it's just hard to find the gate. Anyway, otherwise no problems.

I'm tempted to try the motor oil and maybe the AmsOil (75W-90) just for comparison.

Best,

Gary
