Oil in coolant Posted by skibumm100 [Email] (#3255) [Profile/Gallery] (more from skibumm100) on Mon, 30 May 2022 07:33:13 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Hi Guys, discovered a lot of oil in the coolant of my wife's 97 CSE. It's got about 220,000 miles on it. My initial thought is head gasket so I bought an Elring set from eEuro and took it apart. I left the exhaust manifold on it since the gasket doesn't leak and I didn't want to turn this into a big project of removing broken studs. I looked at the old gasket and I didn't see much of a leak path between the oil passage and coolant jacket. There was a lot of oil in the coolant and the crankcase was really low. Not a lot of coolant in the oil but definitely some. The oil still had decent lubricity by feel so I'm hoping the bearings aren't wiped. Anyhow, what other leak paths are there between the pressurized oil system and the coolant jacket? Head gasket is the only one I can think of right off other than a crack, which would be rare. What am I missing? I am not planning on taking the head to the shop to get it planed. The head bolt are the old style w/o the washer. I thought about reusing them but decided to replace with new ones. They won't be delivered until Thursday so I put the old ones in just snug so I can continue assembly and I'll replace with the new ones and torque them down when they get delivered. I'm going to need to flush the coolant system as there was a lot of oil in it, really thick and milky. TIA!
