Since the thermostat is a non-instant responding device, it is thought that opening at a lower temperature will keep the overall temperatures down a bit.
Townsend Imports has recommended the lower temperature thermostat - from their website: "Saab supplies two thermostats, an 89 and an 82 degree unit. We highly recommend using the 82 degree unit to keep the engine as cool as possible but still within its designed operating temperature."
