Replaced My 97 's steering rack and Unsurprisingly Broke the Clockspring. Despite being aware of how fragile these are. I.. Locked.. my Steering wheel.. Zip ties and a pair of Vise grips. It Could not move... before removing the rack.. But In process of centering ..though still Not understanading exactly how though. Now ~30 years old ARE astoundingly Fragile.
I fitted a long owned 'spare' hoarded for exactly such a need.
Will disasemble /forensically examine the broken one.
These are NOT rocket Science... merely a ribbon cable roll up. Will need to find the break and resolder it in same technique used to repair damaged ribbon cables. Or failing that Buy a length of fresh Ribbon cable and replace the over aged brittle one. Might even work.
