I've had the same thing happen on my 9000's. In my case the little pigtail hose rotted in half at the filler neck inside the RR wheel well and sucked enough road sand and dirt into the rollover valve that it plugged it up solid. Big whoosh when opening the gas cap. It was collapsing the plastic fuel tank and broke the gas gauge thingy. I check them periodically now. Easy to check, not too bad to fix.
