Thanks for the pointer, I downloaded the appropriate 2:7 manual from the Saabnet collection. (P0444 diagnostics start on page 180 there.) That has some nice detailed electrical diagnostics. As I said the valve does trigger with the Tech2 so it's not clear it's an electrical problem but will check the items in the manual.

I've also found information online saying that a leaky or disconnected evap hose can also cause this code. Either way I wasn't planning on buying a replacement valve without further troubleshooting, just trying to see if there's a source this discontinued part in case it's needed.

Now I just need to find time to get to the stupid thing before winter weather sets in since I have to work outside - or wait until spring to deal with the problem. (That evap canister is in about the most awkward danged place possible.)
