Since the connector "H6-5" called out in the shop manual for the purge valve is easy to get to behind the right-hand turn signal, I cleaned the contacts with DeoxIT. This definitely improved things.

Previously the check engine light was coming on within a few minutes of clearing the P0444 code. At this point the car has been driving a couple of hundred miles since cleaning that connector and the check engine light has not returned...

However - there is still a pending code for P0444, so the problem is not completely solved. When I get the chance and some good weather to work in I'll get to the canister inside the fender and clean connections there as well as check for deteriorated hoses.

The way it is now though the car would get through inspection since in NJ the monitor for the evap system does not have to be complete to pass, as long as the check engine light is not triggered. For a car this old it can actually pass with 2 monitors not complete, with a few exceptions that have to be OK. (That's the way I got this car through the last inspection.)
