And I thought it was rust. I guess that is partly correct...isn't rust slow oxidation whereas burning is fast oxidation.
As I recall, the Mercedes salesman (circa 1992-1993) was saying that the supercharging approach of Mercedes (in the C and/or E class at the time, I forget which exactly) was better from a reliability standpoint, whereby the pump is belt-driven rather than exhaust gases-driven, as I understand it. Of course, this is an argument that a layperson might buy, as it seems to be intuitive and common sense, less things that get cherry red.
