I agree with the others, but here's some additional points.
I've been working on my own cars (some 40+ now - all European) for 31 years. Because of this, I have been able to afford cars that otherwise the maintenance would have killed me. Also living here in North Bay, ON the nearest SAAB dealer is about 4 hours away with only one other SAAB in town; who am I going to trust, some kid who has never seen one or me (I've owned 3 9Ks, 2 99s and a 96). I agree that I may not be as fast as a pro but I am to the point that I have more experience on a wider variety of makes than most mechanics. Don't necessarily want to sound like the old guy, but in this case age does have some benefits.
Over the years, I have acquired most of the tools I need to do a job and have also realized there are some things better left to someone else (body work, exhausts, and gearboxes). In the end, working on your own wheels is simply a matter of not being afraid to give it a try, remembering and learning from your successes and mistakes (i.e. it goes back together the way it came apart), and realizing that you can screwed it up usually for cheaper than the pros who screw up more than I do becuase they don' have any ownership in your car.
My two cents!
