My reasons are much the same. When I bought my first 9000, I was commuting about 80 miles every day and couldn't afford to have the car off the road. I took the car to the dealer for most things. This habit persisted through my second 9000 and into my current one. However, by this time, I was living 20 minutes' walk from work. Just as well as the dealer spent forever in an unfortunate chain of events which left me £2000 down and very unhappy with them (I told them what the problem was, but they wouldn't believe me until they had spent lots more of my money).
I now use the dealer for parts that can't be got elswhere (not many) and do everything myself. I can afford to keep my car in much better shape and am renewing almost everything that betrays its 150K miles. I have learned a lot and enjoyed myself.
I agree that some things are not worth doing yourself. I made an exception yesterday, however, when I fitted my JT 3" exhaust system. Since it is non-standard, I didn't think I could trust anyone else to take enough time to get it right. It's a well-designed system and fits very well, but it needed a methodical approach. Getting the old one off was a pain - had I wanted a standard system, the local exhaust shop would have got the job.
