A later engine might bolt up to a '70 gearbox, although in production the '69-'71 gearboxes only ever came from the factory with the 1.7L and 1.85L Triumph engines. Those gearboxes were extremely delicate to put it nicely, so even if it will work, you would be ever so much better off with a later gearbox, preferably a '78 or later box with a chain drive primary. However, that might get you into swapping drivers and drive axles, I am not sure - I don't have much experience with earlier cars (Doug probably knows). There were also some recent posts on putting in 5-speed which might be a good choice if you are using a 16V (maybe your donor 16V is already bolted up to a 5-speed box). Good luck!
