John Collins, in Jefferson OR, does vSAAB repair and has done engine swaps into early 99s, so he'd have a good idea of you'll need.
As Gary stated, you _don't_ want to waste your time bolting a late engine to that early gearbox ... if it does bolt up. Remember, the '71 had the Triumph-Standard engine (similar to a 2.0L TR-7 engine). The blocks are different and the flange where the 16V engine bolts to the sump may not match up to the early gearbox.
Your best bet would be to find a '91 5-speed, because that is the most reliable of the 5-speed years, and it would get better mileage in high gear than a 4-speed. I happen to like the 4-speed better for some untangible reason ... mid-77 and later ones had the more reliable chain drive, as do the 5-speed ones.
