James,
I'm a little late to the discussion here, good advice from Doug and Larry. A couple of things on my side:
- as we discussed by email, you can either send out the master for rebuild, try to buy a replacement (check with Chip Lamb or maybe Andrews of Princeton) or get a seal kit (same sources) and rebuild it yourself. Sending it out to White Post gets you a tested unit with known fresh rubber and a lifetime guarantee, so that's my suggestion.
- I use DOT4 fluid (Castrol LMA is DOT4) from NAPA. I hate to say "it's all the same", but I change it every 3-4 years and it seems fine (even on the track last week).
- I made a "poor man's pressure bleeder" by just taking an extra master cylinder cap, drilling a hole in it, and installing a tire valve mounted on a big washer inside. Send me an email and I'll take a pic of it for you. Then I just use my bicycle pump (don't over pressurize!) and open one wheel bleed screw at a time until the fluid runs clear.
- my experience with the '77 EMS is that I've had to flush the fluid through a couple of times in the first year or two to get all the crap out.
- Water and dirt are the enemies - if you keep changing the fluid every few years the calipers and master will last a LONG time.
- I am always nervous about 30 year old brake hoses. Those are also available at NAPA or you can get steel braided ones if you really want to go crazy.
Good Luck!
Gary
