I was thinking you might want to take a bit of that hose and keep it in a jar of gas to see how it holds up over time. That way you don't have to keep opening your tank.
My hose mount dries up well after a week, but letting it sit in fresh gas for another week gets it flexible and gooey again. There might be enough integrity to hold the pump in place. Of course the big problem here is the different gas of today than that of the 70's, which the original rubber mounting might not hold up well to.
I haven't been able to find any SAE 30R10 -- the specification for submersible hose -- in anything over typical fuel hose sizes (3/8 and 5/16).
Regarding frequent openings of the tank, I'm going to try to fabricate a pump removal tool that will fit over the 4 3/4" OD bung nut with notches cut for the wings. I need to save the wings from mangling using the hammer method.
