The link is to four more pages of the service manual -- a procedure for validating ignition components. The test values for the coil are similar for your two years. Your 77 being an EMS is certainly likely to be electronic ignition which this procedure includes. This procedure will help you identify the faulty component.
I read somewhere (probably this service manual) that the coil for the electronic ignition is stronger than the conventional/points system. I doubt swapping the coils would cause any damage though.
A multi-meter is an essential tool. You're only dealing with Volts DC and Ohms to K-Ohms. There is no need for one that's very expensive or complicated.
