I wish I were closer too, but your local mechanic is your best bet. This is definitely a hands-on exercise. One of the most troublesome pieces of this early electronic ignition is the induction coil inside the distributor. It's like the reverse of an electric motor -- when the distributor spins this induction coil inside the distributor sends a low voltage signal to the ignition amplifier which turns around and fires the timed spark through the ignition coil. I have the very same issue with one of my 1978's. You can spin the distributor (either mounted to the engine or removed) and can measure an AC signal from the small gauge wires that connect at the base of the distributor. This is part of the procedure in the service manual test procedure I posted.
