That all depends on how large you go. There is no easy way to tell the ideal diameter, that depends on the engine design (displacement, bore, stroke, # of valves per cylinder, camshaft design, typical RPMs, capable HP, torque, etc), exhaust routing and length, style of muffler, catalytic converters, etc. If you go too big you can reduce too much back pressure and then you'll lose power. On a car with a really good header or a car with a turbo you can go to a large bore exhaust because the header or the turbo will provide all the necessary back pressure.
The 2.25" exhaust on your 444 seems pretty big! Does it have a header? What have you done to the engine, didn't that car come stock with a 1.6 or a 1.8L? I think the stock exhaust on my dad's 544 is probably 1.5" Uh ohhh, now we're talking non-brick shaped bricks ;-)
