The distance and shimming that the townsend site references does not seem to be applicable to the problem we seem to have. What we seem to have found is that the 'new' pump impeller puts the seal surface on the bottom further down, compressing the spring loaded seal too much. I am guessing that these later 'new' impellers with an insert of harder & polished metal for the seal surface have been incorrectly laid out, providing a seal surface at a lower elevation. This is evident in comparing the impellers from 'old' pumps in the scrap box with the 'new'. I had never thought about the spring loaded seal and overcompressing it. I do recall the red seals from years ago. I am finding that pump rebuild parts from different sources contain exactly the same parts. It appears to be sort of a mix between types II & III, with 12 cogs and an impeller retained by a nut. Did install one of these assuming the nut was for pressing the impeller on - we removed the nut before closing things up, and the impeller rose over time until it was machining the bottom of the cover. I am confused by the semi-press fit of the impeller over an 'O'-ring on the shaft. I was recently surprised to find that the two seals, shaft & impeller are the same in 'caged' pumps and direct into the machined block pumps. Only difference in components and dimensions seems to be the 8 versus 12 cog gears and the 'O'-rings that seal the cage into the block.
