This evening I assisted in R&R of WP in Mike's '80 99. He had just installed a new pump and it leaked horribly. The problem appears to be that the water seal under the impeller was compressed so far that the spring was fully compressed and caused the seal to be cocked and not sealing. I checked the seal thru the two small holes in the impeller before we pulled the pump and using a thin punch to push on the seal, could not verify any spring action. It seemed that the impeller was very low in the pump housing. I have always installed the impellers to fully seat on the step in the shaft. We guaged impellers from the box of old pumps and found that the 'new' pump impeller has the machined seal surface noticeably less distance from the lower edge of the impeller. We installed another new pump and guaged to press the impeller to within 1/16 inch of the step on the shaft by leaving out the flat washer between nut and impeller and running the nut down to just beyond flush with the end of the shaft. We also verified with the small punch that there was still definite spring action in the seal assembly under the impeller. Concerned that the nut might loosen and allow the impeller to move ? Absolutely dry on completion and after 20 minutes of running and full pressure in the cooling system w/ 7 psi cap.
Any thoughts on liberal use of synthetic grease on the gears and a bit on the seal surfaces under the impeller?
