Bob,
I have been running a single pulley belt on my 16v engine in my 99 for eight years. This runs the water pump and altenator. I just carry a spare and keep the belt tension tight.
Clearance issues are the water pump pulley and the heater core. Make sure the latter is in good condition because it is tight with the 16v installed. You can modify the harmonic balancer by cutting off the extra ring. It is easy to make clearance for the crank pulley. When I had the head off last year I replaced the water pump as preventative maintanace as I didn't know if I could get to it with the head on the car. It was still difficult to wiggle the pulley free.
