Update: My alternator is, indeed, hitting my heater box area… Now what? New engine mounts?
Short version of my weekend fun w/two questions: I managed to internally break one of my spark plug wires by pulling too hard on it when it was stuck on a plug. A new wire kit is on order since nobody in SLC seems to carry them. That leads to my first question/s:
How unique are plug wires to a specific car? Won’t 7mm wires from one car work on another with the same core size? I know the connectors can be differently shaped, but if you found a wire set with similar connectors, couldn’t it be used as a substitute?
I replaced the leaking, hardened cork cam cover gasket with a new one, using the blue silicone gasket sealant. I couldn’t find torque settings for the posiDrive screws so I thought I might go with 10Nm. After seeing how much the cork was getting compressed before I even got to 10Nm, I decided that hand tight was good enough – the screws had been really, really loose when I took them out, so maybe that was a sign of how much torque was needed… Any ideas on how tight these screws should be? Is it too late to back them out a bit or tighten, if needed?
Long version: I've been plugging away at a bunch of small maintenance items on the 99T as of late and I am getting a little burned out. The weeks before I bought my 99 had been filled with work on my gf’s “new” 1983 Rabbit GTi to get it up to strict Utah safety code, so I haven’t done much beyond work on cars for over a month.
Saturday, I was replacing the air filter on the 99, as well as the fuel filter. First – as on the ‘83GTi with the Bosch CIS, the fact that the air flow dealy sits right on the filter housing makes filter changes no fun. I ended up disconnecting one of the fuel feeder lines (that ran to the front left of the car, by the filter housing to some valve thing) so I could get the top off of the housing. There was a pretty decent amount of oil at the bottom of the old filter, pooled up in that concave plastic thing. I imagine this is from the crank case breather or something and it is normal (my motorcycle has this same situation).
As I was wrenching the hell out of the fuel filter ends (banjo fasteners?), I managed to break the throttle cable adjuster thing – the threaded plastic that attaches to the bracket on the throttle body. A moment of terror engulfed me as I dreaded hunting a new one down, not to mention the fun of installation. I managed to notch the remaining plastic barrel and get it to fit very nicely into the bracket, thus sparing some heartache.
After the fun of the gasket replacement, I managed to pull apart one of my ignition wires… then I put in new plugs. Now, I can’t start the car to see if my gasket replacement holds until my new plug wires come in.
And I’d planned to get the car into a shop to get the suspension bushings replaced this week too. Oh well.
