I use the controller for a couple of reasons: longevity and power use. The 99's electrical system can barely keep up with stock accessories. With the EWP on continuously along with headlights, wipers and cabin fan, the voltage regulator cannot keep up, at least not at idle. So you will notice turn signals running slowly, lights dimming when the radiator fans kick in etc. The ewp controller only runs the pump when its needed, so it alleviates this situation.
The Davies-Craig pump does wear out eventually. I think it is rated to last for 2000 hours of continuous operation. So the less you run the pump the longer it will last. Again, advantage: controller.
But there is a third option. Wire in a rheostat to control the speed of the pump manually. Davies-Craig may have a kit that does this but if you are handy with electrical systems you could probably do it yourself with parts from rat shack. You will have to pay attention to the temp gauge (well we all do that anyway right?) and constantly adjust, but the advantage is that you can economize the power draw, extend the service life of the pump AND save on the cost of the controller.
My EWP saved my 99 and has been going strong for ~2 years. Temp is always right at the 'N' and cabin heat works great. Good luck, feel free to email me if you have questions.
