Doug,
As I know you do excellent work on your cars, and work in a body shop I wish for some suggestions.
I need a welder ( I sold my Miller Mig two years ago; it was a great welder..paid about 750.00)
My 99 has cancer on the body, before and after the rear wheel well.
I want a concours type of 99. ( no hint of bodywork) I dislike putty/ bondo.. for several obvious reasons. I'm opting for welding and lead soldering. Eastwood even has solder without the lead content.
What I wanted to do was slice off the rust, and weld replacement metal from a 900 as the shape of the metals appears the same.
Now, Should I buy a TIG welder? I know they are about 1700.00; but this is my passion.
I have several Saabs in need of floor repair, and rocker repair.
My question is distortion... I've been reading up on the TIG, yet not sure if this is hype; yet I read that there is practically no distortion, (Of course depending on the skill of the individual).
Yet a Mig is about 700.00.( with the tank) I prefer to buy a quality products..Miller/Lincoln.
The question is, is it possible to produce the same type of results of a MIG in comparison to a TIG? on the exterior body surfaces. Any advantages of a MIg to a TIG, besides the self feed, automatic features?
Lastly, a body man told me ..any time you weld or patch in metal on the body, it will always show a scar..no matter what you do..
Your opinion is much appreciated Doug.
