Heavens, asking doug for advice when it comes to restorations is the only sensible thing. I just thought I'd add my two bits.
I'll be replacing metal soon enough as well. I had a car with little to no rust at all. I had the thing repainted and some of the details were missed. THe car was driven to South Carolina and on the day I arrived, it was hit. It then illegally taken by the insurance people (the accident happened before I even had an apartment to live in and as luck would have it, happened just outside the guilty party's insurance company's office. The office said they'd keep it for me for a few days as I sought a place to put it while the adjusters did their thing. Instead, they had it towed that night to a town 65 miles away...STATE FARM BTW.) The car sat in a holding yard while insurance folks fought with me over the value of the car and in the meantime, surface rust formed here and there. Broke to the bone, I had the car repainted as best I could afford and I will pay for it later, that is for sure. The surface rust is finding a way out. I got the car in DRY Idaho and have now moved to the south and then up to OHIO. It will be a never ending battle so I know my best bet will be to keep an eye out for a 99 carcass back west again. Such a sad story really.
ANyway. SOrry to ramble. It's 11pm, the insomnia is setting in...all is well.
