Hi,
I have seen a 99 GL 4 door which I'm considering buying, no rust and in overall great condition for it's age. Only the original single carb engine is really tired. But I also came across a low mileage B-type turbo engine from a '80 900 turbo with a 5 speed trans.
So now I am considering buying the car, but only if I can fit the 900T engine and trans in it fairly easy. I already own a '78 EMS for about 8 years, which has always been perfectly maintained by my super Saab mechanic, so all the difficult work on the EMS I didn't do myself. But I'm an engineer and I'm pretty handy (imho) and I have the factory service manual. I'm a week off work in January, so if I can do this in 9 days (full time crunch), I would love to get this little 99 back on the road again!
Anyway, here are some questions I have about the changes and problems I figure I might run in to:
1.) the B-type single carb engine does not have the fuel pump in the back like an injection and turbo. Do I need to swap the whole tank or are the holes and mountings for an in-tank pump already there? Do I need to make any other changes, like fuel lines, etc.?
2.) the front engine mount from the B-type 900T is different from the 99 front engine mount. Can I just swap the covers?
3.) does the shifter gear need to be changed when I switch from a 4 to a 5 speed?
4.) do I need to cut out the original battery tray to make room for the turbo?
5.) Are there other things I need to consider/pay attention to?
Any help, advice and/or information would be much appreciated!
