Been late in a response to the 99 carburetor post from over a week ago. My tale is worth telling and I haven't had the time until tonight. Last winter I installed an H motor and 5 speed into my 99 daily driver. I also installed an aftermarket manifold and dual Weber DCOE carbs. These Webers are the finest carbs built and very tunable, they even have ball bearings on the throttle shafts. Been wanting to try this for years and have put over 14,000 miles on the car since back on the road in April. 25 MPG average and have gotten 26.5 MPG at 80 MPH on a 300 mile cross state trip.
Here's how it unfolded, my 75 99 decided to let the harmonic balancer fail after work one night in mid December. Since it is almost imposable to swap this part with the engine in the car I decided that if the B motor and 4 speed has to come out that it was time for the H motor and 5 speed to go in. I pulled the old motor out with the intake and fuel distributor/air cleaner attached. The plan was to swap the earlier fuel distributor setup back onto the later engine. So with the H motor and 5 speed fitted and installed and no intake manifold I thought maybe I'll test fit that dual Weber manifold that has been sitting around for a dozen or so years. Well after a quick search turned up a good pair of used Webers, there was no turning back. Since the CIS fuel pump has way too much pressure for the Webers I made a plug to fit in place if the pump in the tank and draw the fuel through the plug. One of thr pics linked below show the new pump in the engine bay. I later moved it to under the rear seat where it has worked fine for the last 6 months. My original plan did not prevent the fuel injection from going back on, no cut fuel lines or wires. Once the car was proven with the carbs and I was happy, I did cut the fuel lines when mounting the new fuel pump under the back seat and also removed the fuel pressure accumalator. Some day I'll cut and clean up a bunch of wires now tucked out of sight under the battery. This set up really cleans up the engine bay. Also the MSS headers were on the B moror when I bought the car and work fine on the H motor. The intakes are interchangable as well.
Great to have a 5 speed as 90% of my 75 mile round trip daily commute is freeway. Pictures tell more of the swap.
