Two kinds of white smoke... Posted by Larry West [Email] (#1140) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Larry West) on Mon, 19 Jan 2009 08:26:00 In Reply to: billowing white smoke, Jeremy, Sat, 17 Jan 2009 17:02:05 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The slightly greyish, wispy "steam" that dissipates fairly rapidly, probably has a sweet smell - that's coolant getting into the combustion chambers.
A brilliant white, opaque smoke that hangs in the air more, and has a petroleum smell - that's oil burning in the exhaust manifold or turbocharger turbine section.
Water pump failures usually manifest themselves initially in the "B" motor with coolant leaking from the "weep hole" below the water pump cover. In extreme cases, particularly with a car that has been left for a long time, the oil seal may break, and coolant can drip into the sump. But, as you say, it is unlikely that any of it can get into the combustion chamber with a good head gasket.
