Baab,
Feel free to call me again on this topic, just like the fuel system if you go through it step-by-step you can probably get it fixed. Having the gears break in the absence of someone screwing up servicing the pump is unlikely, but, then again, lots of these got screwed up by poor service. I agree with the advice to pull off the water pump cover (you may want/need to pull the intake manifold first. The cover is likely stuck into the block and will need to be gently tapped free with a wood block and/or plastic hammper (tap, not hit!). If you decide to pry, use a thin putty knife and tap it directly into the gasket, but don't pry on the ears where the bolts go thru, they'll only break off. The cover is as rare as the rest of the parts, so you want to save it if you can. Once you have the cover off, turn over the engine and make sure the impeller turns. If the impeller turns and there is not water/coolant leaking out of the block below the pump, then the pump is not the problem. If the pump does not turn then the gear teeth are probably broken, and yes, you will need to pull out the engine. If you get to that point and need advice give me a call - there's more advice and special tools involved!
