If you wanted to spend the 50 bucks, you could still buy the other trigger 715-0020, and use the shutter kit from the XR-700.
The tach adapter sounds right, I remember others with similar issues. Both MSD and Crane have great support BTW. I've called their 800 numbers a few times.
Ditching all the stock ignition in favor of a clean install is not a bad thing, then you know exactly what you have...
What coil are you using? The MSD Blaster coil?
Are you mounting the MSD in the same place as the Bosch unit on the fender on that bracket? For my 1976, I got that bracket out of a salvage yard and mounted the XR-700 there, it looks very stock that way. I also routed all the wires through loom, following the factory wiring paths. My ignition has been one of the most reliable parts of my car and made the biggest difference in performance over everything else.
