Well, I had some fun with it today and fixed the headlight problem. It was in fact the relay. I pulled it out and opened it up, and noticed just a little oxidation on the contacts. So I pulled out the ol' Dremel tool and polished all the contacts, then made sure they were all 'contacting'. When I plugged it all back in, everything worked just fine! One for my side :-)
I spent an hour or so on the Blaupunkt radio before I realized that the radio itself is not working. It's getting power (red light comes on it), I checked the speaker independently, and the antenna feed is fine. But absolutely no sound. But, it's not a major operational thing so it can wait until I find a replacement.
Thanks for the info on the RPMs. Yes, with a little patience I would have discovered those Roman numerals on the speedo. And yes, it DOES sound like it's all going to come apart when I accelerate to higher RPMs, but you agree with my better half who says that she used to wind hers up pretty high all the time. I guess it's not the engine sound so much as the whine from the transmission that was starting to unnerve me. But I'm used to a very quiet BMW 528e and my SAAB 900TC, so... I'll live with it!
I've heard about these bulletproof engines, and this one is in really good shape, so I'll just have to find out!
