That sorta-Y-shape water distribution pipe -- it runs to two short hoses that go into the back of the two cylinder banks, right? -- does NOT connect to the pipe from the radiator! It connects to the water pump outlet, on the back of the pump. (You probably knew that, just hard to visualize when you're not looking at the car.)
Anyway, it has that bend in it to clear a protrusion on the side of the block, just above the oil filter, and I honestly don't know how it originally connected to the water pump because my car had been extensively re-plumbed by a previous owner. The water pump outlet has female threads -- I think they're 1" NPT, regular plumbing thread. There may have been some kind of stub that threaded into this and then joined up to a short hose connecting to the distribution pipe.
I couldn't tell exactly from the drawing in the shop manual, so I just made something up. I went to the hardware store and bought a 'hose nipple' that threads into the female threads on the back of the water pump (use teflon tape on the threads to seal) and has a hose fitting for 5/8" I.D. heater hose, same size as the distribution pipe. Then I just cut a piece of heater hose to an appropriate length to join my new pump outlet to the distribution pipe. You might think it's too close to the exhaust elbow for a rubber hose to survive, but I've been running mine this way for four years and have never had any trouble. Remember, the hose is "water-cooled!"
I found the picture on a Sonett site of another car that's plumbed about the same way -- this is a Sonett engine, but I think the plumbing is the same. You can just barely see the boss on the side of the block where the pipe is kinked to clear it.
