That pipe attaches to the 1" _cast_ nipple on the back of the pump. The threaded hole below it has had outlets with several different configurations threaded into it, depending on what year you have. The earliest red engine had a smaller thread size than the blue and black engines. I don't know for sure, but I think the silver engine had the larger thread, too. When I had to replace it (in about 1971), I discovered that the red engine's rear pump cover with the smaller threaded hole was never even listed in the parts manual. My '67 red engine had a single nipple threaded into this hole. My sister's '68 blue engine had the same single nipple threaded into a reducer that threaded into the larger hole. These two cars had a Y on the top of the thermostat housing and the hoses ran along both sides of the carb to wherever they attach in the back. Later black engines had a nipple with a pipe pointing upward off the side of it, and one of the hoses that is attached to the Y comes down the side of the block to that pipe.
