Wow. You guys went and did what I couldn't bring myself to do, because the answers are so obvious and universal (Why do so many people favor the 1911 pistol? The manual transmission? The hotdog? Baseball? The M1 Garand rifle? The Selmer Mk VI saxophone? The Zippo lighter?). Every once in a while, man has stumbled onto things that turned out to be the best things he could ever conceive of for particular tasks or purposes. To those who see this in certain things and to those who don't, there is neither the need to explain why nor why not. The only thing for sure is, there will never be unanimous agreement on any of them.
I, for example, have always been crazy about engines of all kinds. I always go to the air show, but to listen to the big radials fire up more than anything (did you know that a Harley V-Twin is really two cylinders out of a radial engine? If you like the sound of a Harley idling, imagine what it's like to hear the whole nine-cylinder thing). I've always been partial to 2-cycles - the tiny 20,000 RPM Thimbledromes, Lambretta scooters, mopeds, old Saabs, 3 cylinder Kawasakis, boats, Go-Karts and of course, Lawn-Boys. One of my fantasies is to drop a 250 HP Mercury outboard engine into a 1970 Pinto and take it down to the dirt track on amateur night. Soon even the 2-cycle outboards will be gone because of water pollution. I'll miss the sound and smell. But I've got my Lawn-Boy.

Gotta love those 2 stroke Saab's. Had a 66 Monte Carlo, 850cc and 3 carbs. Man that thing was a dog until I found out the 1" exhaust pipe that ran from the front of the car to the back was plugged. I relpaced it with a piece of scrap 2" pipe and a glass pack. That thing loud. One could hear the 2 cycle "ring ding ding ding" clear across town. The 2" pipe livened up the peformance so much so that the darn thing was impossible to drive on ice. The power would come on like gang busters when the throttle pedal was pressed, so much so that it would spin the wheels in any gear, even on dry pavement.
