It's been a long time since my stroker days, but I do remember that the timing has to be "spot on" as the brits say. It could be that it is off just enough to let it start with the choke out. Second more likely suspect
due to the smoke, is check all the plugs, to see if they are firing, and not oil fouled. You might need to go to a hotter plug. If those two guesses check out, you have a mystery indeed.
