Howdy fellow Saabnuts,
I have replaced all pads and springs on my 1969 96 rear drum brakes, but I can't get the drums back on yet because the fresh pads are too thick to slip over (Duh!). I knew his would likely be an issue, but my adjuster screws seem to be awfully stuck. I took off the pads and springs and took out the wedges and sprayed penetrating oil on the threads from behind. I also made a little tool out of low carbon steel strapping and hardened it in the hope that it would be strong enough to turn those goofy little stuck square screws. Alas, it just mangled the hardened steel of the tool (better than mangling the bolt!) and nothing has moved at all. So my questions is: Have any of you run into probems with rusted/stuck drum brake adjuster screws, and what did you do about it? Should I try heating/cooling the various parts, or is there a recommended penetrating oil out there? My next attempt may be to find some thicker higher carbon steel and to drill it out and make another sqaure cavity in it with greater surface contact than I had before and then to weld it onto some sort of handle. Is there a quicker solution? That would probably take me half a day and it still might not work. Any help and advice is greatly appreciated! Keep Saabing!,
Brendan
