in the mid '80s and it was fabulous - really comfortable seats, quite enough performance even before I had the engine rebuilt and tuned. But in the end it succumbed to rust and the value of the car at the time simply didn't warrant the repairs, sadly.

Only real reliability problems were with the ignition, solved by fitting an electronic unit. Also, the column shift needed careful adjustment - not difficult, and the change was really nice to use.

These cars handle delightfully well on the skinny tyres they came with, but you can add a little negative camber, go up a tyre size and change the dampers for a bit more edge. They respond well to twisty country roads (just throw them in sideways and keep your foot down) but are very relaxing on the highway, decent ventilation and low wind noise for such an old design.

Over here in the UK they fitted the 1.4 V4 engine and that's perhaps the weakest element, not the smoothest unit by any means though it did prolong the car's market life by ten years or so. It's tempting to compare the overall with a VW Beetle but IMHO it's a much better and more interesting design, and certainly stronger and safer though as has been said in other posts it doesn't have many of the safety features you may be used to.

However - from reading your posts it sounds as though this particular example is pretty well shot, and the guy selling it doesn't know much about it anyway. Suggestion - don't do it now, but try a good 96 when you can - you might fall for it!
