I've always been told that it was a dealer installed option. But as Bob says, you have to run the steel balance shaft gear (which are pretty scarce these days). I wonder what the dealers did about that for installation- pull apart the motor to install the steel gear or what?
You also need a special double crank pulley.
I happen to have the complete setup pulled from a 96- underdash unit, compressor, cooler, control unit, steel balance shaft gear, and the special crank pulley. I'm thinking about putting it on eBay to help fund the purchase of another VSaab project... Unfortunately, I can't vouch for the seals in the compressor, but I'm thinking it would still bring some decent money as these are getting pretty hard to find.
Ashcraft recently published a how-to book on air conditioning a VSaab.
