Can't you put a wire in the timing cylinder to determine TDC? I haven't done this yet but on Beetles I would simply rotate the engine with a rod in the spark plug hole and make sure where TDC was. The piston would move the rod out to its furthest point when at the top. I could then be sure where the rotor was and align it to the mark on the distributor. I could also verify the timing mark to the crank. This makes sure all of the basics are right. I would think this would work on a SAAB.
