I used the input shaft to help 'twist' the freewheel into place. Once it was sort of in I twisted it anti-clockwise ( i forget, whatever direction it backs off in) while pushing with my other hand with slight downward pressure and it popped into place.
Here's hoping I don't have to rebuild one of these for a long time, and I never need to look at the pinion nut again!
