I say your alternator is not charging the battery.
Put a VOM meter on the battery while the car is running and if it is not reading over 12 volts chances are it is not charging properly. It should read about 13.5-14 volts when running. That is the sign of a good alternator.
That warning light is an indicator of your alternator's health and functionality.
When you attempted to start the car did your starter start? Or was there just silence? or a click or two or three?
Check the battery. Check the alternator. if all the belts are in place it should work but if it is not then it is probably the alternator! good luck
