From what i´ve heard the valve seats are not hardened. But a turbo/injection engine might be equipped with hardened valve seats, probably depends on the market. Maybe you could examine the head and see what material the seats are made of. Just for a comparison, my 99-84 with a standard carburettor H-engine runs on regular fuel. But only because it´s a late -84. All the H-engines with a production date after january-84 has hardened valve seats. Actually I e-mailed SAAB-Sweden and asked them from what chassinumber you could run the engines on regular fuel, and they gave me some numbers. But this information is probably only valid for the Swedish market, because the emission control regulations wasn´t sharpened until 1989. Seems that SAAB had different production lines for export markets, because some of the markets(US)forced them to put catalysts on the cars in the late 70:s/early 80:s (this would obviously require hardened valve seats). But why have hardened valve seats on earlier engines?
If you don´t have hardened valve seats and run the engine on regular fuel you will destroy the valve seats. But opinions differ on how long time it will take.
Anyway, try and e-mail SAAB and ask them.... .
