Yesterday our '73 99L had what I would compare to a automotive 'stroke', right in the middle of 3 lanes of rush hour traffic, uphill and in the dark: we had complete electrical failure. Now this car has demonstrated exemplary reliability in the good few years we've had it so as you can imagine it was a bit of a surprise! It HAD lain unused for about a month in the garage but we'd been using it to commute to work in the preceding few days without hint of a problem. On starting it that evening for the trip home it had been reluctant [usually it fires up on the first starter crank] and the 'no charge' light had been flickering a little. My assumption was alternator brushes coming to the end of their useful life and the charging was dropping off. It ran fine for about 7 or 8 miles then just died, as I said. On investigation we found that the end of the wire at the fusebox to the brake lights had 'fried' and the connector had come apart completely with the heat. There must have been a lot of heat too as the plastic two-part fusebox cover melted. The fuse didn't blow though [it was the correct rated, original fuse not an over wide replacement]. Before you ask, yes there are electrical accessories, a stereo and a third brake light but these have been in place for nearly five years without any problem. Is it possible there's a supplementary fuse somewhere that's done it's job and taken out all the electrics to save further damage? Any hints on where to start greatly appreciated.
John
