The short answer: Check your fuse terminals, both where the wires are and the fuse holders. They may test ok on a multi meter, but still be faulty. Bypass the fuse altogether and test.

Read on for a detailed description of why..........

On one of my trips bush in my 72 99 I had the pleasure of frying my electcics by shorting one of the wires on the fuse box (the wrong side of the fuse...hence it did not blow) I was able to fix it, but after a few weeks i developed another problem with the cooling fan not working at all.

Using a multimeter it appeared that everything was ok ie 12 volt going to the fan when it should. After much cursing, swearing and striping back most of the the wiring harness I discovered the problem. Despite the 12 v being supplyed to the fan it could not supply enough current to even light a small light globe, let alone the fan. Anyway I traced the culprit to the bakelite fuse box. One of the terminals had been cooked in the previously mentioned incident, but apart from a little charring looked ok.

Apparently the pressed in/riveted connection linking the bottom half of the fuse terminal to the top half had been damaged/corroded....allowing it to deliver 12v but no current!!. Maybe your car has a similar problem. Obvioulsy you have tested the fuse box, but try by-passing it altogther. (of course only do this temporarily!!)

My solution- swapping the fuse holder with one from a later mode(78 tu5 to be precise) This required some modification of the fuse box (cutting some bridges and making new ones) but it worked and did not requrie any re-arrangement of the original wiring harness.

Oh as for the car dying....if you have a good short on any wires coming from the battery/alternator the car will die. The battery/alternator is not able to supply enough current to both a good earth short and the ignition. This is what happened when I was bush...the car died...and then the comical scene of me rolling to a stop and franticaly throwing camping equipment from the boot into the middle of a track, trying to disconnect the battery in the boot before the car caught fire!!!

Good luck
Justin
